20 Creative Ways to Help Animal Shelters

20 Creative Ways to Help Animal Shelters

By: Judy Lore, AVHS Volunteer columnist

Cruising the web one windy, cold day I happened upon an article posted from a cat litter company. I do not have cats, but it was a really informative list of 70 Creative Ideas on How to Help Animal Shelters. I can’t list them all but have selected a few ideas that would work wonderfully in each of our towns. Ark-Valley Humane Society would I am sure welcome some of us doing one of these. The web site is worldsbestcatlitter.com/blog.

1. Host a fundraiser on social media. Call the shelter at 719-395-2737 to ask what they most need.
2. Donate handmade crafty toys made from old socks or clothes. Put a knot here or there – maybe some stuffing – and you have a plaything a puppy or kitten would enjoy.
3. Even if you have limited time, there are a number of things you can do to help including walking dogs, cleaning, laundry, and creating enrichment activities.
4. Adopt, if you can.
5. If you can’t adopt, try your hand at fostering. Fostered dogs and cats are more at ease, showing their true personalities and helping their chances of becoming quickly adopted.
6. Knit some simple blankets for kittens.
7. Buy an extra bag of litter or box of dog treats when you shop for your pet and donate the extra.
8. Volunteer to transport animals.
9. The Ark-Valley Humane Society Amazon Wish List is available on their website at: ark-valley.org/donate. It is full of many items to choose from to be sent to the shelter. Easy.
10. Are you a handy person? The shelter can always use your talents.
11. Help post flyers around town about upcoming events.
12. Invite friends to a “Supply Drive Party.” Maybe a BBQ.
13. Turn old T-shirts into cat blankets. Be creative.
14. Help socialize the dogs and cats. You could walk a dog and get them used to a leash.
15. Would your favorite bar or restaurant be willing to let you set up a donation jar or container? Loose change adds up quickly. Ark-Valley Humane Society supplies donation containers to businesses interested in partnering.
16. Are you a photographer? Snap some cute pics of dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens to help get them adopted quickly. Maybe a bow tie or a hat or fancy collar could be used.
17. Having a bake sale or yard sale? Donate some of the profits. Let customers know you are doing this.
18. Organize kids to meet at the shelter at a certain time to read to the animals.
19. Organize a raffle. Collect prizes from friends or merchants. Sell tickets and declare winners.
20. Make some treats for the animals and donate to the shelter with a list of ingredients.
That’s it for now. There are so many more creative ideas on this site that I may share more later. Happy Helping!
