A beautiful 80 pound Alaskan Malamute named Maya entered our doors on December 1st and we all felt there was something special about her but had no idea the reunion that was in store. Like all dogs and cats that enter AVHS, one of the first things we do is scan for a microchip. Through a bit of digging on our end, we found that Maya’s microchip traced back to an organization in Phoenix, AZ – Maya had been initially chipped at our Executive Director’s previous employer, a shelter in Phoenix, Arizona. She’s full of energy, a ball of cuteness, and a total cuddle-bug. At just 15 days old, we welcome our newest (and smallest) resident, Abira. Abira means ‘strong’ in Hebrew and that’s just what this little kitten is. Abira was found by a good samaritan who noticed that her eyes were wrecked with infection and thought surely she needed to be put down. Upon visiting a vet, Abira will indeed need to have her eyes removed, but can make a full recovery and live a long and healthy life. We can’t wait to see......

Sometimes animals come to us having little and needing a lot. This rang true for eight dogs transferred to our small rural shelter on a cold Wednesday afternoon in January. All husky mixes, Gypsy, Dakota, Zola, Elway, Jenna, Balto, Nana, and Willow came to us as a result of a cruelty seizure in a nearby Colorado county.
