By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice Chair Two weeks ago while I was shopping, a young man seeing Ark-Valley Humane Society on my sweatshirt stopped me to say, “I just picked up my 18 year-old Siamese cat’s ashes from AVHS. Losing her was so difficult, and they were so understanding – so kind. Please tell them thank you.” Helping people in this way when a beloved pet has crossed the Rainbow Bridge is just one way the amazing AVHS staff shows compassion to people as well as animals. The Mission of the Ark-Valley......

Jack is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the Week! Even though Jack is a 100 pound Mastiff Mix, he is a big softy! Jack is very happy and gentle with everyone he meets. He is a great pup to send on walks with volunteers, because he is so friendly with new people. Jack has also met other dogs while at the shelter, even small-breed dogs, and has done very well. He arrived at Ark-Valley Humane Society as a found stray, so his back story is unknown. However, everyone......

By: Judy Lore, AVHS Volunteer columnist Another knock on the door causing stress for your pets? Constant barking? Much meowing? My two dogs raise a very noisy ruckus simply when UPS or Fed-EX pull in the drive. I can’t imagine if I had repeated knocking on the door or the ringing of the doorbell on Halloween. Living in the country solves that problem, but my dogs still have delivery folks to bark at until they leave. They are either announcing the arrival of a package – maybe their dog food – or......

By: Judy Lore, AVHS Volunteer columnist Indeed, there is a history to this rather mundane item. I am writing this with an appeal to folks to have a collar on their dogs and, preferably a tag and hopefully, a microchip. There have been so many lost dogs – and some cats – without any of these. Simply having a collar with a tag with your up-to-date information is a way to help you be reunited with your lost pet. If your cat wanders outside, a breakaway collar and tag is also recommended.......

Icky Thump is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the Week! 1 year-old Icky Thump was found with her right leg stuck in a fence at the Cool River Cafe in Buena Vista. The owners of the cafe brought her to Ark-Valley Humane Society to get her some help. The staff examined Icky Thump and found that she had a roughly 1-2” diameter, scrape/laceration on both the inner and outer side of her right heel. These lacerations have been cleaned and according to the AVHS veterinarian, they expect that......

By: Judy Lore, AVHS Volunteer columnist According to Alexandra Horowitz, a renowned canine researcher at Barnard College and director of the Horowitz Dog Cognition Lab as well as a Senior Research Fellow and Associate Professor in English and Psychology, one should not take naming a pet lightly. There is no place for “Hey, Dog” or even less than that as just “Dog.” These denote that the pet is not special and each of our dogs or cats are very special and their name should reflect that specialness. Horowitz has authored several books......

Porch is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the Week! Even though Ark-Valley Humane Society doesn’t know much about the adoptable feline named “Porch”, they have concluded that he is 100% adorable. Porch, approximately 6 years-old, arrived at AVHS as a found stray, but he has the mentality of an indoor cat more than an outdoor cat. He loves attention no matter what you are doing. This includes when the AVHS staff was doing a routine blood draw while Porch was happily purring. Although he doesn’t have a known......

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice Chair Because September is National Service Dog Month, I was prompted to write about service dogs and how they enrich the lives of their owners. Since the publication of that article in The Mountain Mail, on September 19, I have received these questions: “Are those dogs I see working with a police officer in an airport service dogs?” “My daughter loves to read to a dog who visits her school. Is Rex a service dog?” “My friend copes with her anxieties thanks to her beloved emotional support......
