Keep Your Dog Cool

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Volunteer Temperatures have skyrocketed several days in a row, and we all are looking for ways to cool down.  Remember our dogs are less tolerant of heat than we humans. Unlike people, dogs do not sweat out excess body heat.  They pant which sometimes is not enough to keep them from overheating. Heat exhaustion in dogs can cause potentially fatal conditions such as heat stroke and cardiac arrest. Signs of heat stroke are:  excessive heavy panting, glazed eyes, rapid heartbeat, difficulty breathing, excessive thirst, lethargy, fever, dizziness, lack of......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Nigel is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the week!   Nigel quickly became a staff favorite here at AVHS with his loving personality. He was brought in by a good samaritan who found him extremely malnourished and very near death. As soon as we offered him food he became ravenous. We were worried for this sweet boy, but luckily he pulled through.   After running bloodwork we found out Nigel was diabetic. He’s been getting treatment for that now too and is looking for a special home that......

Jack is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the week!   Last week’s pet, Brinnie, was adopted! Thanks to all who shared and helped Brinnie find her perfect fit! Hopeful that Jack will be just as lucky!   Jack is a 1 year old neutered male. He ended up in our care because his last owner was unable to find housing that allowed dogs. He is doing SO GREAT in an amazing foster home right now! He enjoys laying around with their other dog, Leroy, and going on walks.......

Summer in the Mountains

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Volunteer Summer in the mountains is a time for adventure, and it is even more exciting when shared with our furry friends.  They love to share outdoor fun with us and so want to please us, they may not tell us when they are overdoing it. It is healthy to be active with our loyal companions, but we need to remember it is summer in the mountains.  At altitude, the atmosphere is thinner, the sun more intense, the air dryer and hot is hotter. Dogs have physiological reactions......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Brinnie is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the week!   Brinnie is a shy and sweet 4 year old spayed female. She likes to spend her days out on our catio watching the birds and cars go by. She takes some time to warm up to new people, but with some patience she will be purring and laying next to you in bed in no time. Brinnie has been great with the other cats she’s met here at the shelter, and is hoping a home of her very......

Happy Outdoor Dog Days

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Volunteer I just returned from a long morning walk.  The air was fresh, the temperature cool, the winds calm, the skies Colorado blue and the open field full of wildflowers in bloom.  I passed other walkers, several with their dogs.  The pets were on leash, and their owners were using bags to “pick up after” them. Unfortunately, also on my path was poop that had not been picked up, and walkers and bikers whose dogs were not leashed, one of whom bounded toward me ignoring his owner’s calls.......

Open your Heart. Foster!

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Volunteer As summer emerges and temperatures rise, the number of dogs and cats arriving at animal shelters increases which is exactly what our Ark-Valley Humane Society is experiencing.  They are seeing more animals every week and could use your help. They ask you to open your heart and home and become part of their foster program. It will make your summer more fun and make you feel good by enriching the life of a deserving animal. Fostering is vital temporary home care for animals in need.  It helps......

Gaia is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the week!   She’s a 10 year old female Domestic shorthair mix who has been with the shelter since April. This time of year a senior cat like Gaia doesn’t get much interested as we often have kittens available for adoption.   Luckily she’s been spending the majority of her time in a warm and loving foster home who dotes on her everyday. They said Gaia is the perfect mix of independent and snuggly, she will cuddle up on their laps......
