Together Fur-ever

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair One of the goals of Ark-Valley Humane Society is to keep pets and their humans together. It is a special bond of love, not meant to be broken. Such strong bonds can also exist between animals. Sadly, it can be difficult to keep these closely connected cats and dogs together because people often cannot adopt two animals. Luckily that was not the scenario for two adorable, older kittens, Sweet Pea and Rowdy. This duo was raised together from kittenhood. Sadly their owner could no longer keep them......

You can teach an old cat new tricks

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair Not only can you teach an old cat new tricks, you can also teach kittens. Many cat lovers believe cats are just as fun to train as dogs, saying it is a great way to connect with your feline friends and teach them the meaning of a few key words. According to Katenna Jones, a certified animal behaviorist and director of Jones Animal Behavior in Rhode Island, “Many cats love training if done properly, with patience and rewards. Cats welcome learning basic directions and most kittens take......

Pets of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Say hello to our newest Heart of the Rockies Radio News pet of the week, Saturn!  This handsome cat is a 5-year-old Manx/Domestic shorthair mix. He was found and brought to AVHS late last month. Unfortunately no owner came forward for Saturn, so he is now looking for a loving place to call home ❤????   Saturn likes to watch the world form a high, sunny perch. The other cats in our adoptable cat room don’t seem to bother Saturn and he does great with kids! We aren’t sure how Saturn will......

Be part of the pet overpopulation solution!

By: Emy Nettleblad, AVHS Outreach Manager In 2023 Ark-Valley Humane Society helped 264 community pets get spayed or neutered through our owned feline spay/neuter program, owned pit bull spay/neuter program, low-income spay/neuter program for other dog breeds, and our trap-neuter-return program for feral cats. Our goal in 2024 is to help even more community pets get fixed to prevent the birth of unwanted animals, working to help resolve the pet overpopulation crisis in our country. We are fortunate here in Chaffee County to not euthanize for time or space as our wonderful......

Pets of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Meet our Heart of the Rockies Radio News pet of the week, Ryan <3   Ryan is a gorgeous 4-year-old male domestic longhair mix. He was a lost pet found in the community. Ryan was incredibly shy when he first arrived. However after a few days he started to warm up to us and eventually turned into a snuggly and loving cat who would happily let us pick him up and purred when we rubbed under his chin.   Unfortunately no owner came forward for Ryan so we neutered, microchipped and vaccinated......

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair Their world is silent, but they see and feel. Their spirit is boundless. Their only needs are your patience and love, Love that will be returned to you, a hundred fold. They are the special dogs who hear with their hearts. According to both the American Kennel Club and the Veterinary Centers of America, “deaf dogs have special needs, but they do not require much more commitment than any dog.” They cope well with their world of silence, can be easily trained, even competing in sports, and......

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair “Her white coat drew my eye to her photo on an online adoption list. Then I learned her story. She had been saved from a breeder who was planning to shoot her because of her colorless coat, odd looking eyes and deafness, the result of her being a double merle. I did not hesitate to adopt this adorable Australian shepherd puppy. I named her Keller.” “I worked hard to train Keller in obedience using only hand signals, and eventually the dog who was nearly killed for her......

Puppy Love

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice-chair The 2024 Super Bowl that went into overtime was an exciting game. However, the 2024 Puppy Bowl was equally exciting and definitely the cutest competition in sports. Warner Bros. Discovery and Best Friends Animal Society partnered to “stage” the event in order to ”spotlight” pet adoption. This year, the 20th Puppy Bowl broke records with 132 adoptable pets from 73 shelters across 36 states competing to win the Lombarky Trophy. Team Ruff squeaked past Team Fluff with a final score of 72 to 69, with Team Ruff’s......
