Open your Heart. Foster!

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Volunteer As summer emerges and temperatures rise, the number of dogs and cats arriving at animal shelters increases which is exactly what our Ark-Valley Humane Society is experiencing.  They are seeing more animals every week and could use your help. They ask you to open your heart and home and become part of their foster program. It will make your summer more fun and make you feel good by enriching the life of a deserving animal. Fostering is vital temporary home care for animals in need.  It helps......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Gaia is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the week!   She’s a 10 year old female Domestic shorthair mix who has been with the shelter since April. This time of year a senior cat like Gaia doesn’t get much interested as we often have kittens available for adoption.   Luckily she’s been spending the majority of her time in a warm and loving foster home who dotes on her everyday. They said Gaia is the perfect mix of independent and snuggly, she will cuddle up on their laps......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Dewey is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the week!   Dewey is a 10 year old female Domestic Shorthair mix who was surrendered to the shelter last month when her owners could no longer care for her. During her time here she hasn’t had too much interest, it can be a lot harder to adopt out a 10 year old cat, especially when we have cute, younger kittens available. She would make a great addition to your home and is full of personality and sass that will keep......

Collars, tags and chips needed to return lost pets

By: Judy Lore, AVHS Volunteer The topic of dog collars might not sound particularly interesting, but if you dig into the history of dog collars you can read some fascinating information about our relationship to canines and human history.  Collars to control dogs or in some cases to advertise the owners’ wealth and status have been part of history since ancient times. Chipping dogs and other animals is relatively new, as it began in the 1980s. Why write about dog collars and chipping our pets? I am alarmed each time a dog......

Josiah is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News Pet of the week!   Cuddly, wiggly Josiah is sure to win over your heart as soon as you meet him (he definitely has won over every staff and volunteer member he’s met so far!).   Josiah’s story is also one that tugs at the heart – he was in the care of Roswell Animal Control for around 1.5 months. Due to lack of space he was at a high risk of euthanasia. In fact, there were two days during his stay at......

Magic

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Volunteer As the days become warmer, it is heart-warming to see children and their dogs outside having fun, enjoying the “magic” of life.  Dogs and children can be best friends, enriching each other’s lives physically, emotionally and socially, but both need to be taught how to behave together. Children get so excited about a dog, they want to run, scream, chase and hug this wonderful furry friend.  They need to learn that such enthusiasm could frighten a dog, causing unwanted and unpleasant behavior. A few basic lessons about......
