Fosters Urgently Neeeded

By: Ark-Valley Humane Society Staff Ark-Valley Humane Society (AVHS) is in urgent need of fosters to help care for the influx of kittens arriving at the shelter. Some are motherless and only 2-3 days old. Their tiny bodies are cold and weak. Their eyes are barely open, and their pleading mews are barely audible. They need watchful, round-the-clock care, including frequent bottle feeding. They need a loving foster human to care for them and be their lifeline. We are so grateful at AVHS for all of our current foster families. If you......

Let's Race

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice Chair “Crossing the finish line are Jo and her pit bull, Daisy,” shouted the announcer. Both were smiling. They did not win the 5K, but they finished, running the race side-by-side. A great way to bond with your furry friend is to get outside and walk or run. The exercise is physically and mentally healthy for both of you, the fresh air is exhilarating, and the shared time together is priceless. If you and your dog are already regularly and happily spending such quality time together, and your......

Pets are Good for Your Health

By: Judy Lore, AVHS Volunteer columnist Pets are Good for Your Health. Besides, dogs and cats are just darned cute to have around. My dogs are the reason I walk as much as I do on a regular schedule. They let me know when they want to walk and run and I usually heed their call. Simply being in the presence of a pet can provide health benefits for us. Petting a dog can decrease the stress hormone cortisol which, in turn, helps decrease blood pressure and can help us feel less......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Damon is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News  Pet of the Week! Even though 1 year-old Damon is around 88 pounds, he is a gentle giant! Damon is a Cane Corso and basically a giant puppy. He has the silliness of a young dog in that he likes to bounce around and play, but he also has a soft side. Damon is careful not to bounce into you and he has been good with other animals. He previously lived in a house with another dog and a cat and was reported......

Maylee is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News  Pet of the Week! Maylee has been on quite the journey! She was flown to Ark-Valley Humane Society during our recent flight transfer. Maylee was originally from New Mexico and was appeared to be dumped on a road in the middle of nowhere. Since arriving to AVHS, she has been very friendly with everyone! Maylee was placed into a wonderful foster home with another dog and has been doing well. Her previous shelter also said she is dog and kid friendly! Now she......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Cher is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News  Pet of the Week! Cher was brought to Ark-Valley Humane Society as a found stray with her three kittens, Ozzy, Motley, and Stevie, AKA the 80’s litter. As a stray, there is not much history with Cher, but she is very sweet! She loves to strut up to you to get some head scratches. She is currently only available for pre-adoption, meaning potential adopters will go through the normal adoption process, but she will not be able to be taken home until after......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Tinker is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News  Pet of the Week! If you visit Ark-Valley Humane Society, you may see a new greeter behind the front desk. 10 year-old Tinker loves to hang out with staff and give a smile and tail wag to every new person that walks in the door. Though his smile might be more gums than teeth. This sweet, senior dog needed a dental refresh and had 15 teeth removed by AVHS’s veterinarian. He is still a very happy boy! Tinker would love to find a......

Your Clean, Healthy, Happy, and Loved Dog

By: Judy Hamontre, AVHS Vice Chair My friend’s dog, Daisy Mae loves to roll in the dirt. Fortunately, she also likes baths. Of course, she enjoys them because she seems to delight in splashing her mom. Jo just puts on her swim suit, and bath time becomes fun playtime. Bathing our dogs is just one way we show our love, keeping them clean, healthy, and happy. Both the ASPCA and the American Kennel Club offer advice on the care of your furry friend’s coat (fur or hair), skin, nails, teeth, ears and......

Pet of the Week - Heart of the Rockies Radio

Rusty is our Heart of the Rockies Radio News  Pet of the Week! Rusty has previously been the Pet of the Week, but there are currently only 2 cats at Ark-Valley Humane Society that are available for adoption. Hopefully this will help Rusty get more attention as he is a special boy. 7 year-old Rusty tested positive for Feline Coronavirus (FCoV), which is a common viral infection in cats. This virus is species-specific and cannot be transmitted to humans or canines. It generally causes an asymptomatic infection, but can cause minor gastrointestinal......
