In light of recent media coverage, we feel it is important to acknowledge a local, heartbreaking case of animal neglect that our team at Ark-Valley Humane Society has been involved with. This is not an easy story to share, and is one that speaks to both the pain and the resilience we witness in the world of animal welfare. Additional details regarding this case can be found on the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.
On the evening of August 27th, our team received a call from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office, requesting our help with a local neglect situation. Upon arriving at the property, we were met with a truly devastating scene: Five puppies and one mother dog were found outside without access to food or water, and one cat was found inside living in hazardous conditions. Two chickens were also found on-site. Tragically, three of the puppies and both chickens had already passed away. One remaining puppy was in critical condition, and the mother and one additional puppy were found separated from the other animals.
The surviving animals – three dogs (mother and two puppies) and one cat – were immediately transported to our facility for medical treatment and care. Our dedicated staff worked through the night to try to save the critically-ill puppy, providing medical care, warmth, fluids, and all the love we could offer. Despite all our efforts, his tiny body could not hold on, and he passed away in the early morning hours.
His loss, along with the others, left a deep mark on our hearts.
In the face of this painful situation, we clung to the hope that remained through the lives of the surviving animals in our care.
Over the following weeks, our team poured our energy into their recovery, providing medical care, safe and loving shelter, and gentle encouragement to heal not just physically, but emotionally. What we witnessed was nothing short of remarkable. Despite the trauma they endured, these animals responded with warmth, affection, and a capacity to trust again.
Once their health had stabilized, each of the surviving animals received the care they needed to prepare for adoption, including vaccinations and spay surgeries. We are elated to share that the cat rescued from the home has since been adopted into a loving family. Additionally, the sole surviving puppy – lovingly named Hope, for her perseverance to thrive despite such a challenging and traumatic beginning – has also found a home with one of the compassionate individuals who was a part of her rescue.
And then there is Freya, our beautiful, brave mom dog. Donned with a name associated with love and strength, for an animal who has experienced such profound trauma and loss, she continues to greet our team (and her new shelter dog friends) with a sweet, playful, and loving demeanor. Freya is now available for adoption and is still searching for a new home filled with patience, compassion, kisses, and a warm bed to call her own. We hope that this dog finds a home just as special as she is.
As an organization, we see the happiest of times with animals, and we also experience pain and extreme heartbreak. While this story is filled with sorrow, it is also filled with resilience, healing, and the power of compassionate care. We share it with you not only for transparency, but to remind our community that behind every heartbreaking situation, there can also be hope – and that together, we can create better outcomes for animals in need.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our partners in law enforcement and at Humane Colorado for their support and collaboration with this ongoing case. We are also incredibly proud of our dedicated staff who immediately stepped up, volunteering to return to work after hours to help these animals in need, and working late into the night to give the critically-ill puppy a fighting chance.
Their compassion did not end there; our team continued to provide gentle, loving care not only to the survivors of this case, but to every animal in our shelter – each with their own story, and each deserving a second chance at love.
If you feel a connection to Freya, or a drive to help another shelter animal in need, you can apply to adopt, volunteer, or foster with us.
