Ark-Valley Humane Society, Animal Care Technician Job Description

Ark-Valley Humane Society’s Animal Care Technicians (ACT) are a critical piece to Ark-Valley Humane Society’s mission; the primary function of the ACT is to provide care for the animals and adoption counseling for potential adopters.

Responsible for the general care and maintenance of shelter animals including, but not limited to feeding, cleaning, disinfecting, grooming, vaccinating, medicating as well as helping to maintain a clean facility in all animal and common public areas. Responsible for evaluating and monitoring the health of all shelter animals, developing and maintaining vaccination schedules and health records, including but not limited to computer data entry and preparing and marketing animals for adoption.

Provides adoption counseling and support to public based on in-depth knowledge of shelter services and programs including pet retention counseling and referrals, spay and neuter program services, found strays, animal relinquishments, animal adoptions, lost and found animals, and animal cremations.

The Animal Care Technician reports to the Operations Manager.

Responsibilities:

• Follows all proper kennel and common area cleaning and disinfection procedures

• Provides and assists with direct care of shelter pets, including but not limited to cleaning, feeding and vet care as needed

• Provides additional enrichment to shelter pets as time allows

• Provides and assists with animal evaluations including but not limited to Feline FIV/FeLV testing, Canine Temperament Tests, vaccinations, micro-chipping with complete proficiency

• Evaluates the overall health of shelter pets and exhibits proficiency in diagnosis and suggested treatment of common shelter ailments

• Maintains health records of shelter pets, including computer data entry and filing

• Provides animal behavior modification, training and enrichment to shelter pets

• Provides direction to volunteers with tasks assisting with general shelter duties

• Performs general office procedures including but not limited to answering the phone, data entry or filing, as needed

• Assists with pet cremation services, including but not limited to intake of pets for cremation, operation of cremation unit and appropriate disposal or return of cremated pets, and cremation data entry

• Provides adoption counseling services to the public

• Performs animal intakes, reclaims, lost/found reports, and adoptions and other office duties as needed
